Day 18: Inverloch


The day dawned bright and warm. I was lucky  to get up early enough when the temperature was still only 22 C. I made the walk down to the beach in anticipation of the sunrise. As walked I discovered I wasn't the only one with this idea. There were a fair few people out and about. Many runners and cyclists were out before the heat of the day got too intense. As the ocean lies to the south, I made my way to the pier in town to see the sunrise. The sunrise was well worth getting up for.





After viewing the sunrise, I took a wander around the mostly quiet little town. I came upon the village skate park. It is wonderfully adorned by murals of various sizes. These art works were done by local artists and youth. I love the playfulness of the pieces and they were a perfect fit for a skate park.





As you wander through Inverloch there are many public art pieces on display, this mosaic caught my eye near the beach.



Later on in the morning we strolled out for a second walk,  before the temperature started to rise to its high of 33 C. It was a very interesting walk and we returned to the pier in town. As we watched the fisherman , we happened across two sting rays close to shore. The were large beautiful creatures, lazily making their way back out to deeper water. Further along our walk, we saw these two benches. One was a clever joke, the other has been a guide during the day as I have tried to identify as many birds as I can. I have yet to see the albatross or the eagle though.







As the temperature slowly climbed, we decided to spend part of the afternoon at the beach. The high today came in at 34 C. We had planned a few walks, but hanging out in the shade by the water proved to be the best idea. A few dips in the water helped ease the heat, and I got some reading in as I enjoyed the shade.


Tonight I got to cross another food off my "to eat"list, gummy shark. The gummy shark, also known as dog shark, has delicious sweet flesh and was well suited to the fish and chips I enjoyed. 


Tomorrow the temperature is expected to remain at around 30C.We will spend the morning here, then we are off to Lorne.

Day 1 & 2: February 19, 2024 - February 21, 2024 As we began our adventure , I ventured outside our home front door and took this picture to remind myself of what we were leaving behind. Kingston was cold and snowy this morning. It was around -11 C and the sunshine was bright on the new snow fall we received over the weekend. And while it has not been a very cold or snowy winter, it will be a wonderful change to experience summer in February.  Our travels today included a train from Kingston to Toronto, a five hour flight from Toronto to Vancouver and finally a 13 + hr flight from Vancouver to Brisbane. In many ways , the trip is a marathon. In fact as I write this part of the entry, we are 90 minutes from landing in Brisbane. To be honest, at this point in the journey you want it all to just end.  March 20, 2024 Day 20, 2024 On to Brisbane.. Last day    We left Noosa early and made our way to Brisbane. We had one last full day, and we were going to spend it in Brisbane, as we all were leaving through this airport. After dropping off our daughter's partner off at the airport for an early flight, we decided to see the Morenton Bay down by the Port of Brisbane. The bay lies just north of Brisbane , near the suburb of Manly. It is a mostly residential area, with a fine esplanade that follows the edge of the bay. We walked along the parkland and found a small cafe to enjoy breakfast.  After breakfast we headed towards the centre of Brisbane to do part of the river walk. We parked near Stanley Street which is on the upper half of the walk. The weather was bright and warm and I had to remind myself that I would soon be heading home to single digit temperatures.  March 6, 2024 Day 15: Ballarat Mechanics Institute It was a slow start to the day, which was welcomed at this part of the trip. Ballarat offered up blue skies and warm temperatures. The temperatures eventually climbed to 32 C. I did get to enjoy a walk with my new "friend" Louie, we ate lunch and then made our way to the Mechanics Institute of Ballarat.  My interest in Mechanics Institutes goes back to my Masters thesis which looked at the Kingston Mechanics Institute and the attempt to provide adult educational opportunities. In short, mechanics institutes were born out of an early 19th century movement in the UK  to offer education opportunities to "mechanics" or tradespeople and artisans. Many times, the main thrust of the these institutes was the establishment of subscription libraries. Typically, mechanics institutes offered courses and lectures to its members.
