Day 19: Inverloch to Lorne

Today, we made the drive from Inverloch to Lorne. We drove down through the Mornington Peninsula to Sorrento. The drive takes you through pastures and farmlands. The drive gives you a beautiful view of the dairy and sheep farms. There are also numerous wineries through this area.

At Sorrento , you need to cross the water in a ferry. The ferry brings you from the Mornington Peninsula to the Bellarine Peninsula. The ferry is quite large and has two decks for cars. There is a lounge section, with a bar and a place to get coffee. The upper deck can also be accessed if you wish to sit outside, which we did. The day was a beautiful for a crossing. The crossing takes about 45 minutes. It was wonderful to sit in the sunshine. Although it was 30C, there was enough of a wind to make it enjoyable.

From Torquay to Lorne, you take the Great Ocean Road. This road goes for 240 km and hugs the southern coast of Victoria. The road was built after the First World War, and served as an employment project for many returning soldiers.  It took almost 13 years to build, and most was done by hand. The construction involved thousands of men, some of whom were killed during this dangerous work. Today the road is considered a primary tourist attraction in the area. It is a spectacular ride.

We arrived in Lorne in late afternoon, and I decided to venture down to the beach area. As it is a holiday weekend, there were many people in Lorne. However since the beach seems to go on forever, the beach hardly seemed crowded. The water is clear and wasn't as cold as I expected. I saw some wonderful birds and plants on my walk. I stayed out for about an hour and enjoyed the wonderful ocean air.

Tomorrow, I look forward to exploring the area, meeting with some family and enjoying this beautiful beach.
